The article is devoted to the characterization of the idea of the national school in the theory and practice of the national school. Its purpose is to trace the development of the idea of a national school in the works of domestic teachers, to show its multidimensional nature. Materials and methods. The research materials are the works of Russian teachers of the second half of the XIX TH and XX TH centuries. The author uses the following methods: chronological, comparative analysis, work with sources. Results. The article includes three sections. The first section summarizes the ideas of the nationality and the national school in the pre-revolutionary period. The second section is devoted to the development of the idea of a national school in the Soviet period. The final section shows modern interpretations of the idea of the national school. The role of the native language, the ratio of national and all-Russian in the conditions of a multinational state, education of respect for culture and representatives of other ethnic groups are considered. Conclusion. In conclusion, the conclusion is made about the need for further research work in the designated problem field.
