The author presented a description of the main historical trends of the formation and development of the ideas of self-improvement of the individual in the system of professional training in various fields of activity. He conducted a comparative analysis of various points of view on the problem of professional self-education and self-education with a combination of historical and logical methods of cognition, by comparing facts and events, evaluating them in the past and in the present.
