The article discusses the main directions of development of the theory and practice of teaching a foreign language at school. The authors analyzed a large layer of scientific research in the field of psychology and pedagogy, monitored innovations in the field of school practice of teaching children and adolescents a foreign language. On this basis, the main trends in the development of the theory and practice of teaching foreign language to schoolchildren in Russia at the present stage are highlighted. A significant place in the article is occupied by the systematization of methodological approaches to teaching a foreign language, the characteristics of psychological and pedagogical methods and techniques of teaching various categories of schoolchildren, the development of personal qualities and properties of a student that contribute to the successful assimilation of a foreign language and the introduction of innovative techniques and technologies that activate the process of mastering a foreign language by schoolchildren.
