The article reviews the application of subject-activity approach, which enables one to realize the modern requirements for students by means of the implementation of motivated educational activity according to the method of ascension from abstract to concrete, the formation and the development of their capacity for theoretical and creative search. This leads to the movement from the external form of activity to the internally motivated one, from the subject-object relationship to the subject-subject relationship, from monologue to dialogue. The role of the teacher is to create the conditions for involving the students in the process of collective self-education, where the teacher is only a catalyst, and the students become active, thinking, creative subjects of learning activity. The authors reveal the content and the leading functions of three stages of the lesson (guiding and motivational, operational performing, reflexive evaluative ones), which provide the consistent development of the needs and abilities of students to implement the self-directed learning activities.
