Reactions of tetraarylphosphonium iodide with bismuth triiodide in acetone

Сomplexes [Ph4P]+3[Bi5I18]3- (1), [Ph4P]+3[Bi2I9]3- (2) and [p-Tol4P]+3[Bi2I9]3- (3) have been synthesized by the interaction of tetraphenyl- and tetra-p-tolylphosphonium iodide with bismuth triiodide in acetone. According to X-ray diffraction analysis data, the phosphorus atoms in the cations have distorted tetrahedral coordination. In the [Bi5I18]3- and [Bi2I9]3- anions the hexa-coordinated metal atoms are connected to each other by three bridging iodine atoms.
