Special characteristics of competence-based paradigm are considered, the possibility of its implementation through the introduction of the project-based approach in educational process of higher education institution is proved, stages and forms of the project activity of the students are described by the main directions, examples of implementation of the projects in preparation of the highest qualifying paper by students who are trained in «Applied mathematics and informatics» are given, connections of the projects and the competences which are formed at the same time are shown.
