The article presents a critical analysis of a new monograph by the Russian researcher Mother Superior Sergiya (Yezhikova), dedicated to Archbishop Daniel (Troitskiy) of Bryansk and Sevsk (1887–1934), the outstanding ascetic of the Russian Orthodox Church. The description of Archbishop Daniel’s life and confessional feat is based on the materials for his canonization, which have been prepared since 2002 by the Department of Hagiology of Bryansk Diocesan Administration. The study is based on an extensive source base, which is an indisputable evidence of its authenticity. For the first time in Russian historiography, Mother Superior Sergia examines in detail the life and ministry of Vladyka Daniel, reveals previously unknown facts of his biography and relates them to the position of the Church and society as a whole. The conclusion is that Archbishop Daniel (Troitsky) remained faithful to God through all trials, imprisonment and exile. He fought earnestly against Renovationism, opposed the “Gregorian” schism, and was not afraid of persecution by authorities. An important component of the study is an extensive bibliographic list that along with the main text and appendices, can be a field for further research, providing future researchers with basic foundation which can use to carry out their work. The monograph of Mother Superior Sergiya (Yezhikova) will be a significant historiographical event among the studies of problems of church- state relations in the 1920s and 1930s.
