Reception of eastern and western cultural traditions and images in Japanese animation

The article examines the formation and speci city of anime in the context of modern mass culture, identi es the factors that had a decisive impact on it, in particular, the artistic and religious traditions of Japan, as well as modern socio cultural realities, including the assimilation of images of Western art. The article shows the evolution of anime art, it is noted that the rst cartoons in Japan were created as an experiment at the beginning of the XX century, they copied foreign animated works and di ered in uncomplicated plots. Over time, Japanese animation develops and becomes a separate independent art form, which is based on centuries old Japanese culture, including manga. The national speci city of anime quickly manifested itself in its reliance on traditional Japanese beliefs, which are associated with the worldview of the characters, the peculiarities of the development of the main themes and plots. For example, traditional religious beliefs are of great importance for understanding Japanese animation: Shintoism, Taoism, and Buddhism, which in uenced the speci cs of the Japanese mentality. Anime characters o en have names associated with Buddhism and try to follow its principles. The article analyzes the assimilation of images of Western visual culture by Japanese animation, the desire to creatively rework them and include them in the context of Japanese culture, focusing on a global audience. Unique visual solutions, topical topics raised by modern Japanese animation, make this phenomenon extremely attractive to a wide range of viewers. Due to the wide range of themes, anime enjoys wide worldwide popularity. Currently, Japanese animation is not only the most important product of promoting Japanese culture in the world, but also contributes to strengthening intercultural relations and mutual enrichment of cultures of di erent peoples.
