The article considers the abstracting of foreign language texts as a learning method for postgraduate students in a technical higher school aimed at improvement of their ability to process foreign language data. The author notes the problems, the psychological ones in particular, which the teachers resolve in the course of postgraduates’ training. As a vocation-oriented informative reading to be mastered by young specialists the author considers selection of authentic texts and a system of pre-text and after-text exercises.
