The article gives the analysis of the scientists' positions on the problem of the student's self-development. Attention is drawn to the need for reflexive activity in the development of the student's personality. The article specifies the basic terms «self-development», «reflection»,«creative self-development of the person», «reflexive self-development». It reveals the external and internal conditions of professional self-development, defines sources, methods and means, criteria of self-development and rules of self-development. It also determines a goal setting as one of the main questions of self-development. The article indicates the value of reflexive diaries, feedback profiles and other means of self-development. As an example of a program of work on self, Franklin's rules are given.
