The article examines the problem of ideological consolidation of the multinational people of the Russian Federation based on the theory of institutional matrices and the idea of the Russian philosopher I.A. Ilyin. The authors consider the historical example of the Cossacks as an initially multinational and multi-confessional social group that came to Orthodoxy as a single ideology in the process of a single professional and economic activity. It is significant that the Cossacks, as a social group united by public service and its provision, acted as a factor in consolidating Russian society in different historical periods during the 20th century. Of scientific interest is the reverse effect of the theory of institutional matrices, when the prevailing everyday life of a multidirectional social group is reflected in a ready-made ideological construct ‒ Orthodoxy, while in the classical sequence, on the contrary, the ideological projection, reflecting the main goals of society’s development, legitimizes subsequent economic and political ways to achieve them. The semantic constructions of the theory of institutional matrices and the theory of national security are used in the work. The dialectical method and the integrative method were also used in the course of scientific research. The object of the research is social relations and processes related to the ideological consolidation of the multinational people of the Russian Federation in the context of ensuring the national and ideological security of the state. The subject of the research is the institutional, ideological and socio-cultural mechanisms of consolidation of a multinational society, manifested in the reverse effect of the theory of institutional matrices on the example of the formation and historical development of the Cossacks as a special social institution of Russian civilization. The purpose of the study is to identify and scientifically substantiate the role of the Cossacks as an institutional and ideological factor in the consolidation of the multinational people of the Russian Federation based on the analysis of the reverse effect of the theory of institutional matrices in the system of national, ideological and ideological security.
