Breeding results of early-season, drought tolerant hybrids and sunflower varieties in the Volga region

The principal direction of sunflower breeding in Saratov is the creation of early-season, high-yielding varieties and hybrids suitable for arid climate conditions. Within a centenary of the scientific work of Agricultural Research Institute of South-East Region was created the theoretical basis of breeding for resistance to a number of pathogens, was developed earliness and productivity, was collected an extensive range of breeding samples, were created varieties and hybrids intended for cultivation in warmth and precipitation deficit zone. Now breeding work is directed at creation of hybrids and varieties of different direction use, suitable for changing climate conditions.
