Фрагментация ДНК сперматозоидов является важным фактором в этиологии мужского бесплодия. Тем не менее, данный анализ по-прежнему не используется как рутинный метод оценки мужской фертильности. Как было показано в ряде исследований, мужчины с высоким уровнем фрагментации ДНК имеют значительно более низкие шансы на зачатие естественным путем или с помощью методов вспомогательных репродуктивных технологий, таких как внутриматочная инсеминация и ЭКО. В идеале, фрагментация ДНК должна быть сведена к минимуму, где это возможно. Окислительный стресс является основной причиной фрагментации ДНК в сперматозоидах. Эндогенные и экзогенные факторы, способствующие окислительному стрессу обсуждаются и во многих случаях легко контролируются. Пероральные антиоксиданты играют важную защитную роль, т.к. хотя бы хрупкое равновесие восстановительно-окислительных реакций требуется для нормального созревания и функционирования гамет, а также оплодотворения. Снижение окислительного стресса и комплексный подход может улучшить шансы пары на зачатие естественным путем или с помощью вспомогательных репродуктивных технологий. Источники окислительного стресса должны быть тщательно изучены у мужчин с высоким уровнем фрагментации ДНК и модифицированы в тех случаях, где это возможно.
