This article is an attempt to conduct an in-depth analysis of theories about the nature and characteristics of aesthetic emotions and their impact on self-realization. The article presents the opinion of researchers that aesthetic emotions are a multicomponent phenomenon, and notes the lack of a unified approach to formulating the definition of this concept. The existing views and approaches to considering the phenomenon of “aesthetic emotions” are summarized, and various points of view on the categorization of its components are outlined. Based on the analysis and systematization of scientific sources, it is concluded that aesthetic emotions are the most important component of the process of self-realization (self-actualization). Some provisions of A. Maslow's theory on self-actualization and peak experiences are supplemented by comparing them with the experience of transcendence and catharsis obtained when interacting with works of art. It is shown that the impact of works of art on the emotional state of an individual can be considered as a means of self-realization. The further direction of the research is seen in the development of experimental methods for measuring and categorizing aesthetic emotions.
