The article focuses on the first contacts of the Europeans - especially missionaries -with the peoples of East Asia in the early modem period of modem history and their role in spreading scientific knowledge and a new religion - Christianity in such countries as Indonesia, Japan and Vietnam. These topics may be of great interest to orientalists since their study allows us to see the little-known details of the contacts of the East and West at that time in a new light.
