The role of a teacher has been transformed due to the global changes in modern higher education. The article describes the problem of guidance in the educational process based on the reflexive approach. Providing a detailed description of a social portrait of a student, the description of general principles of pedagogical guidance and the peculiarities of reflexive guidance in higher education were defined. The ideas of subjectivity, individual approach, interaction and pluralism in school subjects are discussed in detail. The article provides new opportunities for teachers based on the leading position of a teacher in the educational process. The results of the persistent experimental research show the interconnection between the organisation of the educational process by a teacher and the development of students’ reflexive competence. In the process of reflexive guidance students master reflexive skills of making decisions, anticipating their consequences, analysing the stages and intermediate results of their own actions, positioning themselves in problematic situations and the ways of collective communication in specially created pedagogical conditions. The role of a teacher in reflexive guidance is formulated as one of the independent directions of realisation of the educational process in higher education.
