The role of speech culture in the professional activities of a library specialist

The paper outlines informative-organizing role of library work in the context of intensification of information processes that hampering effective communication between subjects of social ties and relations. The authors stress out a meaning of instrumental function of library communication for achieving goals of library activities. Speech competency as a structural element of a today’s librarian’s information culture and professional consciousness is considered. Basic requirements to a librarian as a party of professional communicative act (logical-semantic validation, intonational semantic balancedness of talk, etc.) are stated. Key reasons of non-effective communicative interaction between a librarian and a reader (such as mistakes in transformation senses of a professional speech message in semantic-logical form, inadequacy of dialoguers’ communicative competency levels, errors in selection of linguistic material, etc.) are analyzed. The authors argue a status of library profession as linguointensive with reference to a project of Russian professional standard “Specialist for Library and Information Activity” that defines approximate list of labor actions of an employee of a modern library institution. According to the document, considerable part of a librarian’s working hours is related with constant speech communication; this means that library activities can be classify as a type of job activity that takes special language training. The authors trace the relation between matter of basic professional academic program in “Library and Information Activity” and increasing complexity of requirements to communicative knowledge and skills of library specialists. Also, the paper sets a list of typical academic disciplines that expressly or impliedly aimed at forming developed skills of speech communication of further professional of library sector.
