Using the example of a sociological survey of Kuban students, the article examines the role of family members in the formation of interest in physical education. The questionnaire survey of young people is supplemented by interviews with parents. Only 14 % of respondents indicated that their family had no influence on their engagement in physical activities. The majority cited parental and sibling role modeling. The most common forms of physical exercise among youth included gym workouts, ball games (such as football, volleyball, etc.), running, and swimming. All respondents acknowledged the benefits of engaging in physical activities together with their parents, which encompass not only sports but also outdoor activities like hiking and active recreation. However, perceptions of these activities varied among respondents, categorized as beneficial “for society”, “for the family”, and “for the individual”.
