Несмотря на своевременную реперфузию, 7-10% пациентов с инфарктом миокарда умирают во время госпитализации, и у 23% выживших развивается сердечная недостаточность в течение одного года. Реперфузионное повреждение в большой степени ответственно за финальный размер инфаркта. Несмотря на прогресс в реваскуляризации миокарда, профилактика и лечение реперфузионного повреждения при инфаркте миокарда не является успешной в клинической практике. Гипотермия может уменьшить реперфузионное повреждение, тем самым улучшить выживаемость и снизить количество осложнений при остром инфаркте миокарда.
