The purpose of the paper is to analyse K. Wiggin's most successful novel "Rebecca from Sunnybrook Farm" and its film adaptations released between 1917 and 1938. Neither of them succeeded in showing both personal and physical growth of the heroine as no actress can play a ten-year-old child turning into a young lady. All the same these attempts are important as landmarks helping to explain the plot transformation for screen production and trace the evolution of a child's screen image in the American cinematograph during the first half of the 20th century.
