Rhombic signs from Chernoozerye II and Pegan: ornamental invariants? Attempt to justify and localize the style

Бесплатный доступ

The study explores stylistical similarity of decorative patterns on two daggers, one from Chernoozerye II (Sargatsky district, Omsk region) and the Pegan grave (Makushinsky district, Kurgan region). The Pegan decorative pattern based on a ‘chain of rhombs’ is represented by an invariant of the Chernoozerye type. The identified complexity of the analogy which manifests itself in sign syntax of the decorative text, the form and morphology of the key sign, the pattern of its graphical layout cannot be incidental as this complexity illustrates similarity of two decorative traditions that existed in the final stage of the Paleolithic and the Mesolithic and were common in the areas between the Middle Irtysh region and the Trans-Urals. The contacts between these regions are now confirmed not only by technical and typological factors of lithic industries but also by stylistics of decorative patterns on bone items. These reasons allow us to attempt to localize the area where the ornamental representation of the motif is constant. The conclusions provided are preliminary. For these statements to be more valid, it is necessary to have follow-up studies (continue archaeological research and study available museum collections) in the southwestern part of the Siberian region.
