The article compares two fairy tales: "The Rose and the Ring" by W. M. Thakeray and "Don't Leave Me" by G. I. Polonskiy, based on Tha-keray's fairy tale. The fairy tales are very different from each other, so that "Don't leave me" can be called a loose version of "The Rose and the Ring" but also can be considered an independent fairy tale only partly based on Thakeray's story. The article, however, focuses on similarities between the fairy tales: their allegoric and didactic character, author's play with readers' expectations and Polonskiy's allusions to Thakeray's works.
