The review is dedicated to the book by B. N. Tarasov “It is about the truth… about Russia.” Historical Views of Russian Thinkers and Writers of the 19 th Century (St. Petersburg, 2017), containing an analysis of the ideas of prominent Russian writers and philosophers of the 19th century (Konstantin Leontiev, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Fyodor Tyutchev, Leo Tolstoy and others). It is shown that B. N. Tarasov is not limited to the historical views of the studied authors, but considers their holistic worldviews, including anthropological, socio-political and spiritual-moral ideas. The analyzed ideas are compared with a wide range of views of Russian and foreign thinkers. In particular, when examining Dostoevsky’s historiosophy, it is noted that the writer was not an opponent of technical progress as such. At the same time, he exposed many of the progressives’ delusions, by virtue of which a person is captured by material idols, and the concepts of God, love and humanity are supplanted by the desire for everyday comfort and economic benefit. A similar thought is prevalent in the works of Fyodor Tyutchev, who saw the apotheosis of modern civilization as a person with anti-Christian principles separated from God. The book leads to the conclusion that the common thing for all studied Russian thinkers is the understanding of the need for the triumph of the moral principle in man.
