The article analyzes the views of representatives of Russian conservative sociology of the 19th -early 20th centuries on the issue of progress. Studies on this topic in the history of Russian sociology of the preSoviet period remain relevant, since Russia, just as then, continues to refine its own path of development and the social ideal that is most adequate for the specifics of Russian civilization. The features of conservative sociologists' ideas about the criteria and mechanism of progressive development are considered. It is highlighted that conservative sociologists' views on progress are based on their rejection of the modernization process that has begun in the country. The conclusion is made about sociologists' rejection of the evolutionist approach to social evolution, about turning to its cyclical vision by means of organic theory and substantiating the inevitability of preserving the existing social order and traditional values.
