The present article deals with theoretical and practical material that shows the influence of the context on the ability of phraseological units to acquire positive and negative connotation as it is often difficult to define their shades of negative and positive meanings beyond the context: some phraseological units can express either positive or negative connotations under the influence of the text synergy, demonstrating enantiosemy. The authors consider the problem of enantiosemy realized by means of phraseological units with the semantics of “oral speech” in the Russian and English languages.
