The article explores the problems of literary translation in the context of Russian-foreign literary relations in the middle of the 18 th century. The first Russian translation of Henry Fielding's “The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling” is examined along with other translations of N.I.Oznobishin's works published by the article author. The author addresses the most unknown facts about translations of Fielding's works in Russia.
