Представлен краткий обзор исследований, посвященных изучению последствий пребывания ребенка младенческого и раннего возраста в сиротском учреждении на его нейроэндокринное функционирование (на примере исследования секреции гормона кортизола). Такого рода исследования проводились как во время пребывания детей в учреждении, так и в долгосрочном периоде при помещении их в замещающие семьи. Рассматриваются вопросы негативного воздействия ранней социально-эмоциональной депривации на физиологический ритм секреции кортизола у детей.
