The aim of the present article is to present the lexical semantic features of the foreign word ܐܘܢܓܠܝܘܢ ˀ ēwangēlīōn in the commentary of Ishodad of Merv on the Gospel of Matthew according to the ancient manuscript Dorn 622, which contains Ishodad’s entire commentary on the New Testament. As a rule, this word is used in the commentary to refer to the life of Jesus and his teachings, sometimes representing the book of the Gospel. The second part of the article deals with the Syrian word sḇartā that is the Syriac equivalent of the Greek word ܐܘܢܓܠܝܘܢ ˀ ēwangēlīōn . The study observes that the lexeme sḇartā has the meaning of good news in a general sense in the Old Testament but acquires a sacred meaning in the New Testament, where it is inextricably linked with the Gospel of Jesus that is with his life and teaching.
