The terms “rationalism” and “mysticism” at each stage of the historical development of European philosophy acquired new characteristics and were saturated with other subtleties of content. Today, understanding the specifics of rationalism and mysticism is of particular relevance due to the presence of contradictory, including crisis, trends in the development of society. The consideration of rationalism and mysticism in the semantic and terminological aspect allows us to understand the modern mechanisms of their interaction. The article is devoted to the semanticetymological and historical-philosophical analysis of the terms “rationalism” and “mysticism” used in European languages. The author notes the regularity of the application of the Latin-language category “rationalism”, which goes back to the ancient philosophical tradition of ideas about reason as a condition of the organization and knowledge of the world, as well as the Greek-language concept of “mysticism”, associated with the Byzantine theological and philosophical tradition of a transcendent understanding of God and ways of knowing him.
