Semiotic markers of status identity: comparison and collation of English, American and Russian complimentary utterances

The aim of the scientific research is to elicit semiotic markers of status identity in English, American and Russian lingua cultures as exemplified by complimentary utterances borrowed from modern fiction. It is essential to study semiotic markers of status identity due to the urgent social semiotic field of investigation. The methods of semantic and pragmatic interpretation, quantitative estimation are used in the study. It was found out that the English and American compliments occur mainly in a symmetrical situation of communication while the Russian compliments tend to occur in both symmetrical and asymmetrical situations of communication. The research reveals the specific characteristic features in producing compliments by the representatives of different status identities. The results of the study can be used in such academic courses as Sociolinguistics, Semiotics, Stylistics and Pragmalinguistics.
