The School of Translation (Yixue guan) was opened at Peking University in 1904 due to the great demand for highly qualified specialists with knowledge of foreign languages, including Russian. It absorbed the traditions of Foreign Languages School T’ong-wen Kuan, which was established in Beijing in 1862 with the help of foreigners. The author focuses on the educational process of the school, its curriculum, faculty, and financing issues. Although the educational institution existed only just over 10 years and didn’t have prominent persons among its graduates, its undeniable contribution to Chinese education can be found in the developed regulatory framework and practical methods of teaching foreign languages.
