Cello "schools" of XVIII-XXI centuries: historical survey, traditions and modern innovation

Based on the chronology of publications of instruction manuals for cello, compiled by the author, the article for the first time introduces an attempt to recreate an authentic picture of the history of existence of the most specific type of cello teaching literature - the basic guidelines for playing the instrument. Authors’ “Methods”, that embodied all the most significant achievement of the famous cellists, had a major influence on the progress of national schools of instrumental art and became a basis for transfer of the developed national traditions. The analysis of the most significant tendencies that have found the reflection on pages of musical editions, allows to track the development of cello technique, approaches, styles and features of thinking of different epochs.
