The article discusses the features of the functioning of symbols in the structure of realistic narration by the example of the story "Mr. from San Francisco" by IA Bunin, identifies the theoretical and methodological aspects of the study of symbolism and philosophical problems. The connection between the symbolic layer of the work and the mortal plot, which determines the scope of artistic generalization, is revealed. The conditions necessary for the appearance of the aesthetic reception of artistic imagery are substantiated, various levels of symbolic understanding of reality and their correlation are determined. The disclosure of the ideological and artistic originality of the work involves the identification and analysis of symbolic details, the poetics of the title, the plot-compositional structure. The determination of the socio-temporal determinism of phenomena leads further to philosophical conclusions. The formation of the aesthetic perception of schoolchildren is defined as an important task of school teaching literature.
