Waste management system as an element of sustainable development of St. Petersburg

The article considers the process of solid municipal and household waste management as an element of the regional sustainable development of St. Petersburg. The concept of “sustainable development of the region” is highlighted, its components are indicated. The problems in the solid municipal waste management system in St. Petersburg related to the initial stages of waste collection, transportation and sorting are considered. A proposal for modernizing the waste management system has been put forward, with potential benefits including enhanced efficiency and profitability in the early stages. Drawing from experiences with regional projects like “Formation of an integrated solid municipal waste management system” and “Clean Country”, a new regional project focused on modernizing solid municipal waste management is being recommended. This project aims to not only upgrade the waste management system, but also to improve infrastructure in waste management, promote innovation and information sharing in waste recycling, encourage responsible consumption, and support sustainable development. The amount of the project realisation was estimated, the scheme of financing at the expense of budgetary funds and private investments was proposed. The implementation of the project proposed by the authors will make it possible to achieve the target indicators of the national project “Ecology” in St. Petersburg and the regional project “Clean Country”.
