The articles studies the functioning of the doppelganger motif in the fictional world of Diane Setterfield’s The Thirteenth Tale. The cast of characters in the novel is made by a complex structure of twin characters, representing various options of the doppelganger motif: Vida Winter and Margaret Lea: the spiritual and aesthetic doppelgangers; Margaret and her twin-sister Moira: mystic doppelgangers; Vida Winter and the Shadow Girl: also mystic doppelgangers; Charlie and Isabelle Angelfields: natural doppelgangers turning to pathological relations; their daughters Adeline and Emmeline March: natural and even more pathological doppelgangers; The Missus and John-the-dig: emotional and social doppelgangers; Hester Barrow and Dr. Maudsley: spiritual and intellectual doppelgangers; Aurelius Love and Mrs. Love: spiritual and emotional doppelgangers. Again, the manifestation of the doppelganger theme on very different levels of the cast of characters supports the statement that this motif pervades the fictional word of the book.
