The cast of characters in the novel is made by a complex structure of twin characters, representing various options of the doppelganger motif: Vida Winter and Margaret Lea: the spiritual and aesthetic doppelgangers; Margaret and her twin-sister Moira: mystic doppelgangers; Vida Winter and the Shadow Girl: also mystic doppelgangers; Charlie and Isabelle Angelfields: natural doppelgangers turning to pathological relations; their daughters Adeline and Emmeline March: natural and even more pathological doppelgangers; The Missus and John-the-dig: emotional and social doppelgangers; Hester Barrow and Dr. Maudsley: spiritual and intellectual doppelgangers; Aurelius Love and Mrs. Love: spiritual and emotional doppelgangers.
