The author of the article addresses such an aspect of world artistic culture as portrait painting. The art of portrait painting is one of the brightest culturological phenomena which reflects the specific features of painting tradition of this or that nation, region, epoch or civilization and which can be divided into two large groups - the Western one, which developed on the basis of European art school, and the Eastern one, which found its representation, among others, in the Chinese painting tradition. There are two approaches to portrait painting in the world practice. With the consideration of historical peculiarities of various art schools, it examines the specific features of portraits in European academic and Chinese method of teaching painting. The work determines the leading principles of teaching and ways of combining the two systems.
