Seed reproduction in grain legumes. Theoretical and practical considerations

The data of literature and own investigations are summarized on the seed reproduction systems of main grain legumes of Russia in connection with the problem of germplasm collection proper regeneration in N.I. Vavilov All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Plant Growing. Information about pollination control and flower biology should be taken into account when regeneration procedure is chosen for every crop and wild relatives. Isolated facilities should be arranged for cross-pollinated plants. Some evolutionary aspects of leguminous reproductive systems are discussed. Evolution from cross- to self-pollination could be considered as a trend of «domestication syndrome» in grain legumes.
