The article deals with the function of such repeated words as “beautiful” and “wonderful” in Tolstoy’s novel as being most frequent in his texts. However, the motivation for using these repetitions do not fully coincide with the context of their target in literary discourse where each element is functional, and, according to Tolstoy himself, determines the value of a literary work, which, in its turn, is expressed in the clarity and certainty of the writer’s attitude to life. As it is known, linguistic and stylistic repetitions in a literary work are used to create semantic links between separate text fragments. They perform a hermeneutic function and help understand the author’s message. Meanwhile, in “War and Peace” explicit repetitions are based on the multiple use of the same words, so they create a sensation of not always explained “violations”. Sometimes it is difficult to answer the question what additional meaning the author wants to achieve. This semantic material in the text is able to show the artistic world of the writer from an unexpected side. It allows to correct popular opinions about the axiology of the writer that is to understand from what viewpoint the author depicts and creates the aesthetic world in the novel “War and Peace”. No matter whether they are the result of an elaborate “carelessness” or “spontaneous” speech behavior on the part of the author, verbal repetitions actualize the question of language methods of the writer, which, according to the tasks formulated by V.V. Vinogradov, are needed to be combined into a coherent concept of narrative speech in the novel.
