The study aims to explore the representation of color designations through derivative adjectives with the root ryzh- (the Russian root word for red or ginger) in the Russian poetry of the first third of the XX century, as well as to examine their frequency of use. The primary method employed in the analysis is descriptive, incorporating word-for-mation and semantic analysis, along with classification, dictionary definition analysis, etymological examination, and statistical analysis. The author proposes to categorize the compound adjectives containing the root ryzh- into two main groups: 1) color-color adjectives and 2) color-non-color adjectives. The illustrative material drawn from the poetic works of this period reveals that poets with varying frequency employed three subgroups of compound color-color adjectives (less frequently) and five subgroups of compound color-non-color adjectives (more frequently) to vividly convey the depicted reality and to aesthetically realize their intentions. The former three subgroups denote the connections with the color red of: a) another color, b) a color shade, and c) a potential color characteristic, while the latter five subgroups denote only one red (ginger) color: d) in possessive constructions, e) in combination with the names of living beings, f) in combination with non-color qualitative attributes, g) in combination with procedural attributes, and h) as part of a transitive group. The findings of this study may prove valuable for linguists interested in the linguistic characteristics of Russian Silver Age poetry and could also be beneficial in the development of dictionary compilation practices.
