The Semantic Function of Quotations from St. John of Sinai’s “Ladder” in St. Ambrose of Optina’s Letters to Monks. The Theme of Obedience

The article is devoted to the hermeneutic analysis of the spiritual letters of St. Ambrose of Optina by a monk in the context of the creation of St. John of Sinai “Ladder”. Pr. Ambrose was directly involved in the preparation of the translation of this book into Russian and its publication, which explains the frequent citation of the “Ladder” in letters. The focus is on the elder’s messages to the nuns, united by the theme of obedience as one of the key virtues in Christian asceticism and a necessary step in the monastic movement up the ladder of virtues. An analysis of quotes from “Ladder” in the letters of the elder is carried out, their place and role in the semantic structure of letters is revealed. Of the 47 letters quoting “Ladder”, in 6 epistles the main theme is obedience with the adjacent theme of spiritual leadership, which is explained by the principle underlying this virtue: submission to the will of the spiritual leader as the will of God. At the same time, the motive of obedience is present in most letters, combining with the motives of spiritual abuse. Pr. Ambrose gives quotes, as a rule, in an indirect form – paraphrases, allusions, references to the book, which testifies to his free attitude to quoting and desire to re-give, first of all, the thoughts of Listvichnik, as well as an internal dialogue with him. The choice of the quoted “degree” depends on the spiritual “age” of the addressee and the measure of his experimental in the fight against passions. If in letters to the new nuns most often quotes from Word 4 “On the Hemisphere...”, then the more experienced elder offers quotes from the “Words” of “Ladder” related to the thematic block of the spiritual struggle with passions (8–23). The elder chooses quotes in accordance with the main spiritual problem of the addressee, and everywhere their ascetic function is the main one, which is associated with the targeted direction of letters to nuns.
