The history of the Scientific Library of the Ural State Law University named after V. F. Yakovlev is connected with the history of the book collection of the Irkutsk Theological Seminary and Irkutsk University. In the catalogues of the libraries of theological seminaries in the XVIII early XIX century there were sections "Works of forbidden writers". The article is devoted to the analysis of this section in the Manuscript catalog of the fundamental library of the Irkutsk Theological Seminary, stored in the Russian State Historical Archive. According to Peter Burke, the object of studying the sociology of knowledge should be not only growth, but also "hiding, destroying and especially discarding knowledge". The books of the "forbidden", allocated in a special section, were thus "discarded" or "hidden" from readers, but not destroyed at all (of the 19 books listed in the handwritten catalog, 12 are still stored in the fund of the Scientific Library of Irkutsk State University, which includes the most valuable publications of prerevolutionary Irkutsk). Having deciphered brief bibliographic entries from the handwritten catalog, the authors answer the questions: what is the evidence of such "rejection of knowledge"; what caused the inclusion of books in this section; why some of the author's books were included in this section, and others were not.
