Socio-Cultural Imperatives of Managerial Culture in Russian Organizations: Manifestations and Organizational Mechanisms

Free access

The article develops a refined interpretation of the concept of the “socio-cultural imperative” within the context of the sociology of management and the study of managerial culture in Russian organizations. Rather than being limited to a narrative review of published literature, the research includes systematization of theoretical approaches, translating imperatives into operational indicators, and conducting a qualitative content analysis of publicly available corporate materials from five Russian companies representing the financial, energy, oil and gas, transport, and retail sectors. Socio-cultural imperatives are defined as stable, generally accepted normative requirements for acceptable forms of leadership, communication, control, and responsibility allocation. Violation of such requirements weakens employees’ trust in the management system and reduces the legitimacy of managerial decisions. The empirical material consists of semantic statements recorded in corporate codes, documents on values, and materials addressing corporate culture and sustainable development. The unit of measurement was the recording of the presence or absence of an indicator of the corresponding imperative in each analyzed resource. The study identifies and operationalizes six key imperatives: trust and transparency of managerial decisions, procedural justice, collective decision-making, respectful attitude towards employees, consistency between declared principles and everyday practices, and focus on the long-term sustainability of the organization. The scientific contribution of the study lies in the development of an operational matrix of socio-cultural imperatives and in revealing the relationship between them and specific management practices. The practical relevance of the research is demonstrated through methods of incorporating the identified imperatives into management communications, HR policy, feedback systems, and organizational development programs, using the example of a retail sector company.
