Analysis of objective and subjective components of an illness situation: study of gastrointestinal patients

The author analyses the phenomenon of illness as a socio-psychological situation and examines acute and chronic gastrointestinal conditions. The research confirms the relation of adaptation strategies to the patient's self-image in the first and second illness situations and his/her acceptance of a new social role - that of a patient.
