В данной работе автор исследует социокультурные аспекты судебных инстанций в колониальной Виргинии. Виргиния была аграрной, «табачной» колонией, в которой поселения городского типа не получили развития. Поэтому для жителей Виргинии дни судебных заседаний были очень важными событиями, когда колонисты собирались у здания суда не только для участия в его непосредственной работе. Они торговали, проводили скачки, петушиные бои и обсуждали последние новости в таверне. Автор также рассматривает особенности таких проблем, как закон и порядок, преступление и наказание, и представляет картину общего состояния юстиции в колониальный период.
