Social study of gated communities: topics and problems

Emergence and growth of the number of areas, access to the territory of which is restricted, mainly by installing a fence, is an expression of social, economic, political and cultural transformations in contemporary societies. The growth of social segregation and privatization of public spaces is the essence of these transformations. However, the closed perimeter of fences does not always lead to increased solidarity and support of each other shown by people constantly living in the fenced area.
