Появление и рост числа районов, доступ на территорию которых ограничен физически, в основном посредством установки ограждения, является выражением социальных, экономических, политических и культурных трансформаций в современных обществах. Суть этих трансформаций состоит в росте социальной сегрегации и приватизации публичных пространств. Однако появление ограждения не всегда приводит к повышению солидарности и поддержке друг друга людьми, постоянно проживающими на огражденной территории.
