Correlation between epical and lyrical in “Kalevala” epos (on the example of Kullervo image from Beloborodov's symphony № 2)

A phenomenon of lyrical origin inherent to the folk epos “Kalevala” was revealed by musical composers in the process of studying this type of genre on the example of musical compositions. A method, suggested by a musical expert Yu. Kon, instrumental in the identification of musical compositions’ epical essence is considered on the examples of A. Beloborodov’s 2nd symphony “Kullervo”. The method is based on the principles of reminiscence and formulaicity. The epic nature of the studied composition is revealed through immensity of presented ideas, generalization of figurative content, narrative sequence of plot events, and concordance with “Kalevala” content. The lyrical origin, as a constant component of the musical composition, is revealed in the essence of emotional feelings experienced by the characters of the epos, through invisible presence of the author’s “eye of the Omniscience”, and through the author’s attitude toward ongoing events. The latter is expressed in the author’s composite thinking and individual musical language.
