The purpose of the article is to examine the relationship between faith and reason in the writings of "Father of Scholasticism" the Archbishop of Canterbury Anselm. This question is insufficiently studied, but it is important for understanding the formation of scholastic theology. Article is based on the writings of Anselm himself, as well as the works of the holy fathers and the views of philosophers on the subject. The author concludes that Anselm of Canterbury has exaggerated the importance of reason in comprehending the supernatural things to the extent that his views became unacceptable not only for the Orthodox, but also for the traditional Catholic theology.
