Comparative analysis of the zoonym “donkey” in Russian and Persian proverbs and sayings

This article presents a comparative analysis of the usage of the zoonym "donkey" in Russian and Persian proverbs and sayings. In Russian culture, the term "donkey" is often associated with stupidity and stubbornness, as evident in phrases like "stupid as a donkey" and "stubborn as a donkey." On the other hand, Persian culture associates the zoonym "donkey" with a wider range of connotations, such as stupidity, laziness, unworthiness, stubbornness, and others. By analyzing these proverbs and sayings, this article reveals that both languages share similar connotations of "stubbornness and stupidity." However, Persian linguistic culture attributes more negative connotations to the zoonym "donkey" that are absent in Russian culture. Ultimately, this article explains how cultural nuances can influence the interpretation and usage of linguistic signs and symbols.
