Competitive values of students involved in sports (on the example of shooting sport)

The article examines one aspect of the athlete’s value system - competitive values of students involved in target shooting in a university section. The article presents the results of a study involving 48 students of the Moscow Aviation Institute. The results of using the Sport Orientation Questionnaire revealed no correlation between the test results and the respondents’ sporting results. Males and shooters showed a greater focus on the goal than on winning, regardless of their sport ranks. Female students show no differences in the values of the goal orientation and victory orientation scales, probably due to women’s need for approval and increased self-esteem. It is concluded that the competitive values of students involved in such a sport as target shooting in a university section are influenced by the style of coaching and the goals they set for themselves, which are not always related to sporting achievements.
